The Formula 1 Flags

The Green flag is given to signify the all clear. This flag is shown at the beginning of the race, and after any event which requires a warning flag.

The Chequered flag is the one that every driver wants to see first. It is waved as the first driver crosses the line and is then held still to denote the end of the race.

The Blue flag is shown when a faster driver is approaching a back marker. It is meant to signal the slower driver to let the other pass.

The red flag signals that the race has been stopped. All drivers should stop racing and return to the grid, but be ready to stop at any other point if necessary.

The Yellow and Red flag signals that the track is slippery, usually because of oil. Drivers should be cautious where the flag is being waved.

The Black and Red flag is a warning that the driver is commiting an offense, or has a serious problem with his car that may affect others.

The Yellow flag signals that there is a hazard ahead and overtaking is prohibited. The driver must wait for a green flag to continue racing.

The White flag is shown when a slow moving vehicle is on the track. This may be a recovery vehicle moving a race car from a dangerous position.

The Black and White flag signals unsporting conduct, and if the driver persists he may be black flagged.
